For Teachers, By Teachers
When an educator is able to extend their lesson beyond the bounds of a school, a higher level of cultural, historical, mathematical, linguistic and scientific enlightenment can begin. Such limitless learning immerses students in the real world and creates moments that evolve into passion and vocation.
As a school administrator and a Spanish teacher, we share a clear educational philosophy: in order for students to grow into globally aware citizens, they must experience as much of life as possible while empowering themselves with the gift of knowledge. We believe that the most effective way to bring the world to students is to bring students into the world – and do so in the safest, most rewarding way possible.
Guiding students outside of the classroom has always been a daunting challenge, but never more so than today. Despite having the most detail-driven plan, a field trip can still result in an unfulfilling venture or – in the worst case – an unsafe or even tragic situation…we’ve all read the headlines.
So to put our educational principles into practice, we teamed with a developer to help all involved in the field trip process – students, parents/guardians, teachers and administrators – achieve a safer and smarter outcome. The result is FieldTripMe™.
During the planning phase, teachers use the FieldTripMe™ website to manage all aspects of a field trip, share information with their administrators and plan GPS-based learning experiences for their students. Throughout the trip, they use the FieldTripMe™ app to track students’ locations in real time, receiving alerts when checkpoints are reached or boundaries are crossed.
Through the FieldTripMe™ website, parents/guardians learn about upcoming trips, complete all permission forms and even make payment for all trip expenses. On trip day, they can also choose to use the FieldTripMe™ app to mirror their child’s journey and monitor their whereabouts.
Students with smartphones use the FieldTripMe™ app during the defined hours of the trip to follow the planned route and know their teacher’s or chaperone’s locations. They receive their teacher’s brief factoids, quiz questions or support files at specific points along the route to make direct, in-the-moment connections between what they’re living and what they’re learning. At any time during the trip, a student can alert their teacher or chaperone to a potentially dangerous situation or request immediate assistance…all through the FieldTripMe™ app (phone numbers are never exchanged) and only during the time of the trip (contact concludes when the trip ends).
No device?…no problem. Students without devices can be offered FieldTripMe™ GPS wristbands so that teacher’s can still keep track of them during the trip.
We’re happy to invite you to a safer, smarter way to field trip!
